The Seiko 5 Sports Lineup — A Brief History

Seiko's "5" designation has been applied to watches since the 1960s, originally denoting five key features: automatic movement, water resistance, day/date display, recessed crown and durable case/bracelet. The modern SRPD series, launched in 2019, revived and modernized the 5 Sports DNA with improved movements, better finishing and a wider range of dial and strap options than any previous generation.

The SRPD generation quickly became one of the most recommended entry-level automatic watches globally — beloved by watch enthusiasts for offering genuine Seiko quality and the NH36 movement platform at an extremely accessible price point.

The NH36 Movement — What You're Getting

The heart of the SRPD series is Seiko's NH36 caliber — an evolution of the legendary 7S26 movement that powered Seiko 5 watches for decades. The NH36 is a significant upgrade over older Seiko budget calibers:

• Beat rate: 21,600 bph (6 beats per second), producing a smooth secondhand sweep
• Power reserve: Approximately 41 hours
• Accuracy: Approximately -20/+40 seconds per day, though many examples run within -10/+15 sec/day
• Hacking: Yes — the seconds hand stops when the crown is pulled to allow precise time-setting
• Hand-winding: Yes — the NH36 can be manually wound via the crown (position 0)
• Date/day: Both day and date are displayed (a feature not present on the older 7S26)

The NH36 is a robust, reliable caliber serviced by Seiko worldwide. It runs well, it's durable and it's genuinely repairable — a meaningful advantage over proprietary movements from smaller brands.

SRPD55 vs SRPD65 — Key Differences

SRPD55 — The Blacked-Out Sport Watch

The SRPD55 features a distinctive black dial, black bezel and black case with contrasting grey or white accents. The overall look is dark and modern — a sport watch that reads contemporary and bold. The SRPD55 ships on a solid stainless steel bracelet and is one of the most versatile color executions in the lineup, working equally well with casual and smart-casual outfits.

SRPD65 — The Classic Sport Dial

The SRPD65 offers a lighter, more traditional execution — typically a blue or green dial with matching bezel, on a stainless steel bracelet. The color combinations reference classic sport watch aesthetics. The blue dial version is particularly popular, offering a more traditional "sport watch in evening light" palette that many collectors find easier to dress up than the all-black SRPD55.

Water Resistance — 100m

Which Should You Choose?

• SRPD55: If you prefer a dark, modern aesthetic with high contrast. If you want a watch that disappears with dark casual outfits.
• SRPD65: If you prefer classic sport watch colors — blue or green dials have broader outfit compatibility and a more traditional appeal.

Both watches use the same NH36 movement and offer the same practical performance. The choice is purely aesthetic.
