Orient Bambino
Buying Guide

The Orient Bambino is one of the most recommended affordable dress watches in the world — a genuine Japanese automatic movement in a refined, vintage-inspired package at $179-245. The challenge for buyers is navigating the many Bambino versions to find the right one.

Who Makes the Bambino — Orient's Heritage

Orient Watch Company was founded in Japan in 1950 and has been a subsidiary of Seiko Epson Corporation since 2009. Unlike many watch brands at its price point, Orient designs and manufactures its own calibers in-house — a meaningful differentiator. The Bambino line has been produced in various iterations since the 1970s, always carrying Orient's in-house automatic movements.

The F6724 and F6922 Calibers

Orient's Bambino uses in-house calibers — primarily the F6724 and its successor the F6922. Key specifications:

  • Beat rate: 21,600 bph (6 beats per second)
  • Power reserve: 40+ hours
  • Accuracy: Approximately ±10-15 seconds per day — respectable for an in-house movement at this price
  • Hacking: Yes — secondhand stops when crown is pulled for precise setting
  • Hand-winding: Yes — a genuine advantage over some competing movements
  • Date: Most Bambino versions include a date window at 3 o'clock; some small-seconds variants omit it for a cleaner dial

The in-house movement matters for collectors: Orient calibers are serviceable worldwide at Orient service centers and many independent watchmakers familiar with Japanese movements.

Version 2 vs Version 7 — What Changed?

Bambino Version 2 (Ver. II)

The Version 2 is the most widely recognized and recommended Bambino — the design most people picture when they hear "Orient Bambino." Features: convex curved dial on a slightly concave case profile, domed mineral crystal, Roman numeral or baton indices, leather strap. Available in multiple dial colors including white, black and champagne. The Ver. 2 uses the F6724 caliber.

The Ver. 2's case is 40.5mm — slightly larger than vintage dress watch proportions, but slim enough for most occasions. Water resistance is 30m — sufficient for splashes and hand washing, but not for swimming.

Bambino Version 7 (Ver. VII)

The Version 7 is the most recent Bambino generation, using the updated F6922 caliber with an exhibition caseback — a transparent caseback that reveals the movement. The Ver. 7 maintains the classic Bambino aesthetic but adds the exhibition caseback as a showcase element. It also offers stainless steel bracelet options in addition to leather, broadening its versatility.

The Ver. 7 runs slightly thicker than the Ver. 2 due to the exhibition caseback mechanism, but the difference is modest. Many collectors prefer the Ver. 7 specifically for the caseback — watching the rotor spin is part of the automatic watch experience.

Which Bambino Is Right for You?

  • Choose Version 2: If you want the classic Bambino aesthetic at the most competitive price point, or if you prefer a closed caseback and slightly slimmer profile
  • Choose Version 7: If you want to see the movement through the caseback, or if you want the option of a stainless steel bracelet for more versatility

Both versions use the same core movement platform and offer the same practical performance — the decision comes down to case configuration preference.
